Abstract

Hanging is a form of violent asphyxial death. It produces painless death for the victims so that it is a widely accepted method of suicide. All cases of hanging are considered to he suicidal until the contrary is proved. An increasing death rate as a result of violence constitutes a large group in medico-legal autopsies and especially deaths due to asphyxia are one of the most important causes in violent deaths. Suicide is one of the leading factors of death worldwide. The present study has been carried out in the Department of Forensic medicine, B. J. Medical College, Ahmedabad during the period between January 2014 to December 2014 and cases in which death resulted from hanging were identified. A totalof4137autopsies were conducted in the year 2014 and out of these cases 194 cases of death due to banging were selected for this prospective study. © 2017, All India Institute of Medical Sciences.
