Abstract

This study was performed to investigate the relationship among family function, mental health, depression, suicidal ideation and to identify factors influencing suicidal ideation. Participants were 1537 college freshmen at two universities in G Province, in South Korea. From September to November, 2015, data were collected using structured questionnaires and analyzed with SPSS/PC ver, 18.0 programs. Family function had significant correlations with mental health(r=.50, p<.00), depression(r=-.71, p<.00), and suicidal ideation(r=-.53, p<.00). And mental health had significant correlations with depression(r=-.74, p<.00), and suicidal ideation(r=-.51, p<.00), also depression had significant correlations with suicidal ideation(r=.57, p<.00). Therefore, it is suggested that understanding mental health and depression in relation to suicidal ideation is an important process to prevent suicide. Based on the results of this study, it is required to develop nursing intervention for suicide prevention of fresh college joiners. © 2017 International Information Institute.
