Abstract

50 consecutive patients of attempted suicide were taken from P.B.M. Hospital, Bikaner, with the aim to study the various factors and psychiatric profile associated with suicide attempt. The self design proforma, socioeconomic scales by Kuppuswami or by Pareek and Trivedi and MPI were administered to record the various informations. The psychiatric morbidity was assessed according to ICD - 10 criteria. 74% patients had psychiatric morbidity and majority were diagnosed as depressive disorder spectrum. Attempted suicide was higher among middle aged people mainly rnaf-6ed male persons, hailing from urban areas and belonging to lower socioeconomic strata of society. These patients have scored high on scale for neuroticism.
