Abstract

80-95 % of childhood acute poisonings are accidental and occur in children younger than age five years. Poisonings in older children and adolescents are usually due to manipulative behaviour, suicide attempts and chemical or drug abuse. Information is given about how to obtain the history in an acutely poisoned child, the clinical manifestations of poisoning and the laboratory investigations needed to confirm the diagnosis and to carry out treatment. Modern treatment methods of acute poisoning are also discussed.
