Abstract

Suicide is one of the leading causes of death in jails. It is the role of the clinician to assess an inmate's risk for suicidal behavior. Typically this involves an assessment of an inmate's suicidal intent coupled with their access to lethal means. However, in a jail environment there are various environmental and psychological stressors which complicate suicide risk assessments. This paper examines suicide risk assessments using case examples of suicidal inmates that are typical of those found in jails. © 2008 by The Haworth Press, Inc. All rights reserved.
