Abstract

Current smoking is clearly associated with suicide. Although the mechanism of these associations is not well known, the most plausible explanation is that smoking is a part of the complex of risk factors that increase the risk of suicide. Smoking cessation has not been associated with suicide, although in some smokers withdraval symptoms can be manifested by depression. US regulatory agencies have stated bupropion, vareniclin and rimonabant as possible risks for suicide. More research focuses on understanding smoking and suicide is needed.
