Abstract

Aim. The aim of the study is to investigate suicides, attempted suicides and admissions for depression in Ticino canton, Switzerland.

METHODS. Ticino Cantonal data on numbers of suicide death and methods, in each sex and age-group, data on numbers of attempted suicides, number of admissions for depression and data on resident population were collected from the Ticino Canton Statistical Office (USTAT), from 2000 to 2007. Raw data were standardized by age.

RESULTS. In males, an increase in admission rates for depression is paralleled by an overall decrease in suicide rates from 2000 to 2004, with increase of attempted suicide. For females, there is an overall trend for decrease in admissions, while suicide rates reached a peak in 2005 and then declined. Attempted suicides constantly increased among females from 2000 to 2005, and then slightly declined. There is a relatively high number of males who kill themselves by firearms.

CONCLUSION. For suicides, Ticino places itself at an intermediate position between the Southern European countries and Northern European territories. On the other hand, rates of admissions for depression are higher than in other Swiss Cantons.
