Abstract

INTRODUCTION: sudden death of closed relatives produces more traumatic suffering than other kinds of death. Sufferer people can feel exhausted and, in some way, guilty. It may take place denial mechanism of death, and an anxious search of explanations.

OBJECTIVE: the present paper attempts to analyze the special case of sufferers' reactions coping with loss by suicide of their relatives. Material and Methods: analysis has been done taking into account results of scientific literature in Psychology field, as well as reports from counseling and self assistance groups.

RESULTS: psychological reactions of this grief process are associated with intense and lasting depression, incredibility and bewilderment. In facing the suicide, there is an exhaustion state; people can suffer conscience pangs, religious and existential troubles, lack of understanding with the suicide victim's decision, feelings of powerlessness, anger and shame. These sufferers have a high risk of pathological grief. The sufferer can feel betrayed and neglected, especially in the cases of children.

CONCLUSIONS: attention to support that must be given to these sufferers, adults or children, particularly in The Health Primary Care level.
