Abstract

About 10,000 persons die by suicide in Germany each year and 90 % of these persons suffer from a mental disorder at the time of suicide. In theoretical models on the development of suicidal behavior the importance of psychosocial variables, such as hopelessness, attentional fixation, social isolation, perceived burdensomeness and reduced fear of death and dying is stressed. In the course of crisis intervention, a sorrow risk assessment has to take place and it needs a relationship-oriented, ambivalence-friendly debate on suicidal intentions, before deciding on the correct treatment setting. This article provides a description of the nomenclature of suicidal phenomena as well as an epidemiology of suicides, suicide attempts and suicidal ideation, refers to the etiology of suicidal behavior and points out central principles of risk assessment and crisis intervention in dealing with suicidal patients. © 2013 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.
