Abstract

Acting as a doctor and, thus the medical ethos are facing a broad variety of new and remaining challenges. On that account, three examples should be given and ethically reflected: wish-fulfilling medicine, increasing economization in the medical sector and the principle of (patient) autonomy. An additional virtue ethical approach, which operates with the key terms justice, humility and dialog ability, intends to examine the still neglected subjective dimension of the medical ethos a little further. Above all, the article attempts to reply to the following questions: Is it still possible to talk about the medical ethos? How can medical acting succeed in an area of tension between ethics, medicine and economization? What are the key features of an understanding of a holistic autonomy and what are the consequences for doctors in case of the patient's appeal for assisted suicide? How can the contribution and the additional value of virtues in a medical context be described? © 2016 Schwabenverlag AG.
