Abstract

The authors address a THOR 50th percentile adult male dummy torso sub-assemblies' three-dimensional finite element model development, calibration, and validation. A jacket, pelvis, two abdominal modules, a lumbar and thoracic spine, bibs and attachments, a rib cage, and shoulders are among the modeled sub-assemblies. CAD data is used primarily in constructing finite element mesh, with consistent mass properties between sub-assembly level physical dummy and model. Abdominal foams, spinal flex joints, bibs, and damping and rib steel materials are some of the deformable materials. Based on sub-assembly, component, and/or material level tests, deformable material parameter calibration is the main systems identification method. Three impact test types performed on test device full assembly, lower abdomen, upper abdomen, or chest validate the model. The study analyzed and compared corresponding experimental data with impact force vs. deflection/penetration simulation results. Energy dissipation measure, displacements, and forces in simulation errors are discussed.
