Abstract

Over the past 20 years, there has been evolution in intelligent transportation systems (ITS). Now rapidly entering markets, ITS is likely to penetrate, in the next 10-15 years, a large part of the vehicle fleet. On road networks, there is continued deployment by road authorities of their own ITS systems. ITS can reduce environmental threats and save lives, time, and money if applied effectively. The author discusses highlights of a PIARC technical committee prepared report on the effects of intelligent vehicles on road safety, as well as the effects of infrastructure technologies, which will be presented in September 2007 at the PIARC 23rd World Road Congress in Paris. Systems become obsolete quite quickly due to emerging new solutions and continuous technology development, and present great challenges to road authorities. The report argues that at least on a general level, common strategies and visions need to be emphasized. And that increased investments, pilots, and research efforts in safety related areas is needed since road authorities, as a major ITS public stakeholder, are largely responsible for ITS safety research. Use of vehicle-based ITS systems is also discussed.
