Abstract

Based on some information on the development of assisted suicide in Switzerland, public perceptions and assessments of assisted suicide will first be addressed. At present, a broad social acceptance of the originally controversial practice is emerging. Nevertheless, difficult questions remain to be clarified, which concern in particular places of death, admission criteria, procedures as well as end-of-life research. Regulatory efforts have so far largely failed, a central problem is the definition of the role of physicians in assisted suicide. © Zeitschrift für medizinische Ethik, Basel. All rights reserved.
