Abstract

Mortality and epidemiological studies together with clinical trials carried out to assess the prevalence of suicide attempts in a population of anxious subjects suggest a strong link between suicidal behaviour and anxiety disorders. After reviewing studies focusing on neurotic disorders, as defined in classification systems prior to DSM III, and specific anxiety disorders, the authors examine potential mechanisms and methods.
