Abstract

In Japan, 10 - 20% of community-dwelling people aged 65 years and over reported one or more falls for one year. The prevalence of falls increases with age in both genders and is greater among women compared with men. That among Japanese is lower than that for Caucasians. The incidence of vertebral fracture increased exponentially with age and the annual incidence for women is 4,000 per 100,000 person-years in their 70s, and more than 8,000 in their 80s. The incidence of hip fracture for both genders increased exponentially with age after 70 years and the annual incidence in the age groups 85 years and older is more than 2,000 among women. The incidence rates of limb fractures are lower and those of vertebral fractures are same or higher among Japanese than those reported from Northern Europe or North America.
