Abstract

The article by Professors Gary Kleck and Marc Gertz in Volume 86, Number 1, titled Armed Resistance to Crime: The Prevalence and Nature of Self-Defense with a Gun, should be corrected to read as follows: 1) Page 158, first full paragraph, second sentence, beginning "This procedure. . ." should read: "These procedures were apparently based on the dubious assumption that few people used a gun defensively that they no longer owned by the time of the survey, or one that belonged to someone else, or one owned for a reason other than protection, or one kept outside the home." (2) Page 159, top paragraph, beginning "The adjustments were based..." should read: "The adjustments were based on a single standard, the present survey. That is, all survey results were adjusted to approximate what they would have been had the surveys all been, like the present survey, national surveys of non-institutionalized U.S. adult residents in 1993, using the same questions used here." (3) Page 159, first full paragraph, last sentence, beginning "Indeed, no survey.. ." should read: "Indeed no survey has ever yielded an estimate that is of the same order of magnitude as those derived from the NCVS." (4) Page 175, second full paragraph, last sentence, beginning "According to this survey. . ." should read: "Offenders were armed with some kind of weapon in 48% of DGU incidents but had guns in only 18% of them."86 86 See Table 3, Panel F. (5) Page 177, top paragraph, fifth line, the phrase "where defenders stated" should read: "where defenders would state." (6) The authors' affiliations and degrees are as follows: Kleck is Professor of Criminology and Criminal Justice, School of Criminology and Criminal Justice, at Florida State University; Ph.D. University of Illinois, 1979; A.M. University of Illinois, 1975; A.B. University of Illinois, 1973.
