Abstract

This study develops a descriptive model for fatality rates of traffic accidents in Jordan. The latter was used to study the effect of motorization level on fatality rate and to compare Jordan's case with those in other countries around the world. The analysis focuses on the causes of accidents and involvement rates of different vehicle types in these accidents. The paper discusses the causes of accidents, and involvement rates, and describes the descriptive model. It was found that road traffic accidents in Jordan are a serious problem, and that heavy vehicles, especially buses and trucks, were most likely to be involved. The study showed that Smeed's equation can be used in Jordan to relate road fatality rates to motorization levels.
