Abstract

This article examines the complex relationships between several global problems and crises and national policies on a regional level. Attention is given to issues facing the European region, in particular Southeastern Europe. Questions such as how regional co-operation can impede the solution of global problems and what are the conditions under which efforts on regional and global levels can be mutually supportive, are of primary importance for understanding the impact of regional policies on global issues. Three issues are presented as case studies: the environmental crisis, the energy problem, and the new role of economic co-operation for regional security. It is concluded by changing and modernizing their domestic structures to improve the functioning of their economic systems, the Eastern European countries may contribute to the overcoming of some of the global crises.
