Abstract

Wheels-in-line skating is the fastest growing recreational sport in the United States. An estimated 105,000 in-line skating injuries received treatment in emergency departments in 1995. This article reports an unusual in-line skating injury: a closed pelvic fracture requiring hospitalization. More commonly encountered injuries are also reviewed. Although there is increasing evidence that in-line skating is associated with a significant number of injuries, protective gear remains greatly underused. It is prudent to promote the use of protective gear, which should include a helmet, wrist guards, and knee and elbow protectors.
