Abstract

A delegation of physicians and nurses sent to El Salvador by the American Public Health Association and other U.S. medical organizations has reported, contrary to the State Department's interpretation, that governmentally-sanctioned harassment and "disappearances" of activist physicians are responsible for the overwhelming deterioration of that country's health care system. The delegation, which also found evidence of torture of political prisoners and "appalling" health conditions in refugee camps, will testify at congressional hearings on El Salvador's progress on human rights.
