Abstract

Munchausen syndrome by proxy is a form of child abuse associated with high morbidity and mortality. The physician is often an unwitting participant. If a child in generally good health suddenly shows signs of a severe illness, suspicion should be raised. Law enforcement and child protection agencies must be notified as soon as the diagnosis is established.
