Abstract

Traditionally quoted levels of the products of combustion are too high to account for all the problems of incapacitation and death in fires. Because people may not die instantly in a fire, they can continue to inhale toxic gases after collapse. Collapse may occur very quickly. Experience drawn from analysing the effects of the Manchester Boeing 737 accident and a building fire are used to debate this issue.
