Abstract

It is in evidence that an increasing number of child abuse cases is uncovered the more conscious we become of the problem and the more experience we collect about it. Hence, in order to help more effectively we must have information on: 1. the aim of our active intervention: Help, not Punishment; and in connection therewith, a wide scope of definition; 2. to recognise the pattern of signs and symptoms or striking features in the behaviour of the children and their families; 3. a few basic rules when dealing with such cases, and possible help that can be afforded while taking into consideration the causes of violence and neglect in the family concerned; these must be tackled. Comprehensive prevention is most important, i.e. early identification of risk groups and timely offers to help--a target that should be aimed at.
