Abstract

This report presents the latest figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) database of deaths from drug-related poisoning and covers the 5-year period from 1999-2003 for England and Wales. The database contains data on all deaths coded according to ICD-9 for 1993-2000 and ICD-10 for 2001 onwards. The database covers accidents and suicidies involving drug poisoning, as well as poisonings due to drug abuse and drug dependence, not not other adverse effects of drugs. The range of substances is contains is wide, including legal and illegal drugs, prescription drugs and over-the-counter medications.  It does not include poisoning with non-medicinal substances such as household, agricultural or industrial chemicals.
