Abstract

Outdoor sports activities such as bicycling, motorcycling, skiing, mountain climbing, running, golf, and flying do not require eyewear to be prescribed primarily on the basis of its impact resistance but rather on the basis of its capacity to provide the participant with protection from ultraviolet radiation. To prescribe the appropriate eyewear, optometrists must be familiar with prevailing standards for protection from ultraviolet radiation, the transmittance characteristics of various ophthalmic lens materials, and the use of tints, and must recommend the eyewear best suited for the activity to be performed.
