Abstract

The results are reported of an experimental study on the effect of skin cleansing prior to blood withdrawal on the alcohol content of blood specimens. In conclusion, three precautions are offered in collecting blood for alcohol determination: (1) Avoid use of ethanol, isopropanol, or other volatile organic substance for skin cleansing prior to venipuncture or capillary blood collection by skin puncture; (2) use only dry sterile gauze pads for covering the puncture site during needle removal; and (3) when using evacuated collection tubes, remove the tube from the collection needle and holder before withdrawing the needle from the puncture site.
