Abstract

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Aviation Safety Program (AvSP) is devoted to increasing the safety level of the National Airspace System (NAS). As part of their research, the AvSP has looked into the use of probabilistic risk assessment methods. Logistics Management Institute (LMI) is supporting this work by developing a unique modeling capability which features two parallel but complementary analysis chains: Markov reliability analysis and operational simulation. Use of the LMI models and methodology will allow NASA to gain a better understanding of their safety technology portfolio and identify drivers of safety early in the design process. This workshop presentation provides an overview of the methodology and a brief demonstration of the operational simulation for a basic scenario in which Synthetic Vision technology is used to perform terrain avoidance.
