Abstract

A follow-up study has been made of 120 families whose 10-11 year old sons were the focus of an investigation of parenting methods (Wilson, 1980, 1982a, 1982b). A significant association was found between parental supervision and delinquency among boys up to and including age 16 which confirms the earlier findings. The results are compared with the findings of a recent Home Office study of parental supervision (Riley and Shaw, 1985). The differences in findings of the two studies are accounted for by differences in definition of "supervision", the measure of delinquency, and methods of investigation.
