Abstract

The author reviews 44 cases of decompression sickness provoked by altitude exposure after diving. All cases were treated between November 1, 1987 to June 30, 1993 at the Hyperbaric Unit of Alfred Hospital, Melbourne, Australia. Altitudes ranged from 100 m to 2,000 m. Discussion includes sources of altitude exposure, bubble expansion with altitude, hypoxia, and altitude exposure after treatment for decompression sickness. Recommendations for flying after diving and ascent rates are provided.
