Abstract

This paper presents a theoretical basis for implementing a music/dance-based reality orientation (RO) program. A scientific study that tests the efficacy of music/dance RO versus traditional RO is described. The results show a nonsignificant increase in orientation in those patients who received music/ dance-based RO therapy. Patients with severe Organic Brain Syndrome made fewer gains in reality orientation in both groups, but all members showed substantial social and emotional improvement. Practical considerations and techniques in facilitating music/dance RO groups are given. An attempt has been made to gear this information toward the nonmusician and nondancer.
