Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of an organized recreation program on the perceived leisure functioning of six elderly, mentally ill patients living in a nursing home. The Comprehensive Leisure Rating Scale (CLEIRS) was used as the assessment instrument. The CLEIRS was completed by a licensed practical nurse who observed the subjects prior to implementation of an organized recreation program and two times during the recreation rogram. Results indicated that one patient improved in perceived reisure functioning, one patient decreased in perceived leisure functioning, one patient showed mixed results, and three patients remained the same in their perceived leisure functioning.
