Abstract

A small nursing home, with a population of 24 and specifically 10 active persons, was introduced to fiber coiling and making baskets or containers. The activity was new, highly creative, easy to learn, and similar to skills previously acquired. An atmosphere of mutual trust had to be created first, and the new technique was then introduced. In a structured situation and with the right supplies the residents learned well and greatly enjoyed the experience. The coiling provided the residents with an outlet for their time, a feeling of self-worth, and a sharing experience of great warmth with the teacher.
