Abstract

This paper explores the use of an art and writing exercise in conjunction with a reality orientation program. The use of art and writing in reality orientation is a major development from the basic reality orientation concept of rote memorization of time, person, and place. This new approach adds a creative, expressive (art and writing) avenue to learning which engages participants to acknowledge time, person, and place. Further explored is the use of themes in art, writing, and discussion which assists participants to interact with each other and discuss their problems and feelings. It is shown through the art and writing process how participants can develop an increased orientation to their present situation and gain a perspective and understanding of their previous problems, conflicts, and possible hopes for the future.
