Abstract

In a recent paper, "The dynamics of military combat", Brackney categorized the types of combat situation into nine separate, clearly defined situations. Another recent paper by Brown, "Theory of combat. The probability of winning", uses a two-variable recurrence formula to evaluate the probabilities that one side will win on given assumptions. This effectively covered the pair of probabilities for five out of the nine situations. This present paper deals with the generation of the probability distribution of the number of survivors in all nine of these situations on the same assumptions as Brown. Further these distributions are shown to yield the results obtained by Brown as the totals of the two arrays of the complete distribution in the five cases common to both papers.
