Abstract

Disasters arrive unexpectedly and in most cases, without warning. There are many physical and environmental issues that health care providers as first responders must consider when dealing with disasters. This article examines the physical and environmental issues that health care professionals in the role of first responders may encounter during disasters or extreme emergencies. It is hoped that discussing this issue will help health care professionals to gain an understanding of the physical and environmental considerations during disasters and therefore to provide the care needed for healing and recovery for both their patients and themselves.
