Abstract

In carrying out their joint responsibility for administering federal programs for pedestrian safety, the NHTSA and FHWA seek to assist states, local government, researchers, and citizen groups in generating increased activity and commitment toward reducing the nation's pedestrian accident toll. These programs involve analysis of data on pedestrian accidents to identify typical accident components and design and test countermeasures, development of program guidelines for state and local administration of pedestrian safety projects, development of user manuals and training courses for pedestrian and bicyclist safety, and funding of pedestrian safety engineering projects as integral elements of federal-aid highway construction and traffic engineering programs.
