Abstract

Objective: To determine by Breathalyzer analysis the blood alcohol concentrations (BAC) in persons suspected of impaired driving and to determine the frequency of analyses performed by hour, day and population within a specific police jurisdiction. Methods: Breathalyzer analysis data for 1992-93 was collected from 62 police detachments in the province of British Columbia, Canada. Data are presented for time of day, day of the week and for detachments of various sizes. Results: BAC ranged from 0-410 mg/dl with a mean of 166 mg/dl. There was no difference between detachments of varying population size. The lowest and highest number of Breathalyzer tests were performed on Monday AM and Saturday AM respectively. Conclusion: Significant numbers of drivers stopped for impaired driving exhibit low or nil BAC implying the use of other drugs causing impairment. The time of day and day of the week data coincide with previous data for alcohol related accidents.
