Abstract

This paper is a review of current developments on bicycle helmets. A search of the literature 1991-1993 produced 50 articles from authors in four continents, but with most work being reported from North America and Australia. Areas of concern discussed include the production and appraisal of further evidence for the protective effects of helmets; strategies to increase helmet use and evaluation of the results of legislation on helmet weaving and on injury rates. Educational programmes in conjunction with legislation appear from the literature to be a good way of increasing wearing rates. There remains a problem in some countries, such as the UK of changing attitudes towards cyclists as road users who need special provision.p>
