Abstract

The Santa Barbara, California, Downtown-Waterfront Shuttle Program celebrated its one millionth mile of service in November 1999. Ten electric buses, provided by a partnership between the city and the Metropolitan Transit District, carry tourists and shoppers through the city's downtown business district and to the nearby waterfront. Ridership has increased each year from 200,000 in 1990 to 750,000 in 1998. Primary funding is provided by the city and supplemented with a 25-cent one-way fare and advertising revenues.
