Abstract

This article describes the new vehicle lifts in the Los Angeles County Metropolitan (Metro) Transportation Authority’s 11 bus maintenance facilities. The new lifts were installed in response to concerns about many of the 120 older, in-ground lifts which were leaking significant amounts of hydraulic fluid, causing lift failures, environmental concerns, and increased maintenance. In addition, the older lifts were not equipped to handle the newer 60-foot-long articulated buses. The author describes the new modular in-ground lifts and the parallelogram surface lifts (manufactured by Rotary Lift, Madison, Indiana). Metro uses the surface lifts to perform regular maintenance and to steam-clean the vehicle’s undersides. Metro’s bus maintenance facilities operate 24 hours per day, so replacing the lifts required careful scheduling; installation began in 2004 and was completed in summer 2006.
