Abstract

This article describes how the Portland, Oregon, Water Bureau uses speed detection signs to slow motorists near roadside work zones. These signs use radar to monitor car speeds and display the speed digitally. The signs set off the motorists' radar detectors so the drivers think there may be police enforcement in the area. The Water Bureau has noticed an increase in driver caution in work zones when the signs are used.
