Abstract

Local governments are developing high-speed wireless communications networks (WiFi) to give lower income residents free or inexpensive internet access, and these networks are cheaper than cellular communications. Philadelphia taps into such a network to provide real-time data wireless services to some of its field employees, including those in law enforcement, fire fighting, and medical emergency services. As cities and counties become more comfortable in the wireless environment, they may want to consider adding networks dedicated for use by their employees as such networks have the potential to significantly improve public safety.
