Abstract

This article describes the Automated Real-time Road Weather System (ARROWS), a decision-making support tool for road maintenance operations. Designed for the Washington State Department of Transportation (WDOT), ARROWS is a system which provides map displays for forecasts of precipitation, pavement temperatures for the statewide road network, air temperature, and wind forecasts. Based on these forecasts, ARROWS also generates warnings allowing maintenance managers to focus on specific locations and prepare alerts if necessary.
