Abstract

The question that repeatedly faced the City of Modesto, located in the central valley of California, was: "What is the ideal utility mapping system that will satisfy the need for efficient interdepartmental and public access to various types of utility information?" Several methods of data collection were evaluated. Scanning was considered, but the challenge became how to adjust the water lines, valves and hydrants so that they were spatially correct on the base map. Global Positioning System (GPS) technology was then considered and the city ultimately selected the Trimble Pathfinder GPS PRO XL Receiver. The GPS equipment was compact and could be carried in a backpack so that data could be collected either on foot or by bicyclists.
