Abstract

Patients at imminent risk of suicide (within 48 hours) generally require psychiatric hospitalization. Short-term risk is an indication for aggressive, closely supervised medical therapy, with possible referral to a substance abuse program. If risk is low but chronic, drug treatment or psychotherapy may reduce underlying stressors.
