Abstract

The UN Children's Fund publication entitled "The State of Pacific Youth 1998" provides a look at research and program activities created in response to identified youth needs in the region. While many of the issues addressed, such as youth suicide, substance abuse, and unemployment, are of global importance, they are exacerbated in the region by the sheer numbers of youth. The report includes a series of case studies of health and community services targeting youth but fails to refer to the situation of rural youth who also face problems and may lack access to services. The report is also unbalanced because it fails to include information on positive actions being taken by youth. This could easily have been corrected by changing the title to indicate that the report focuses on youth at risk. However, the report will be a useful guide for agencies and individuals seeking to develop programs to aid youth.
