Abstract

The mini-roundabout, a small form of modern roundabout that has no solid central island, have become a common design feature in the United Kingdom. This article examines the history, success and some failures of UK mini-roundabouts. The main principles regarding design, safety and general operation are discussed for their potential application in the United States. If well-designed and appropriately applied, mini-roundabouts could gain popularity in the U.S. just as they have in the UK.
