Abstract

A January 2008 revision of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) adds new provisions regarding sign retroreflectivity and minimum maintained retroreflectivity levels. This article describes these new provisions. The new MUCTD language lists various assessments and management methods recommended to manage sign retroreflectivity. If an agency is using an appropriate method to maintain sign retroreflectivity, the agency would still be in compliance with the new provisions even if some individual signs do not meet the minimum retroreflectivity levels at a particular point in time. The new requirements indicate that almost any type of sheeting may be used on any sign, with some exceptions. However, agencies might want to consider investing in higher-performance sheeting, which may have a better life-cycle cost for the agency despite it's initial higher cost.
