Abstract

San Antonio, Texas, is in the process of upgrading its traffic signal system with a new dedicated, high bandwidth communications network; advanced traffic controllers at all signalized locations and optimized signal timings citywide. A robust data and video network will allow staff at the new traffic management center to remotely evaluate and update traffic signal timings in real time, reducing the number of emergency field responses and improving customer service. The five-year program began in 2007, and significant improvements in travel time have already been gained. The upgraded system also provides the framework to integrate future intelligent transportation system projects.
