Abstract

This article summarizes some of the presentations and conclusions from the traffic design and engineering track of the Institute of Transportation Engineers 2009 Technical Conference and Exhibit. The 19 technical presentations and 2 conversation circles that made up this track demonstrated that sound traffic engineering and design, along with effective operational strategies can lower fatality rates, improve the economy and lessen the carbon footprint. Sessions highlighted in the summary include new publications in traffic control devices, roundabout design, traffic simulation modeling and analysis, freeway interchanges and access management, traffic signal management, program management and self-assessment to improve traffic signal operations, and local community practices. In many sessions, the importance of keeping up with change and understanding the principles of change management were emphasized.
